Univision Debate -- English only?

The Univision Debate is scheduled for this Sunday, September 9 at 7:00pm EST. According to Univision's press release, "Univision Communications Inc. is the premier Spanish-language media company in the United States." The debate will be broadcast on the Univision television stations "which reach 99% of Hispanic households" as well as "Univision Radio, the leading Spanish-language radio group which owns and/or operates 70 radio stations in 16 of the top 25 U.S. Hispanic markets and 5 stations in Puerto Rico" and finally the Univision website. So, this is a really big deal. Not surprisingly, Richardson was one of the first (if not the first) to confirm attending the debate.

Now, for the weird part... This is a Spanish language debate on Spanish language television and radio reaching Spanish speakers. But, I have heard that all the candidates must speak in English only! If the English-only language policy is true, I am appalled! Why should a candidate who has been speaking Spanish his whole life now need to speak through a mediator?

I think it is important that Governor Richardson be able to let people know of his strengths -- and one of his strengths is the ability to speak directly to the Hispanic community. Obviously, there should be translators as we have had very good monolingual presidents. But an English only policy is ludicrous for a Spanish language network.

Thoughts?

You're forgetting to mention that Richardson is an AVOWED RACIST. Yep, he explained his unwillingness to call for the resignation of Alberto Gonzales like this:

"The only reason I'm not there is because he's Hispanic, and I know him and like him... It's because he's Hispanic. I'm honest... I want to give him the benefit of the doubt."

Imagine if a white Republican took sides with Janet Reno "because she's white."

FURTHERMORE, Richardson is bent on bowing to Mexico and eradicating our borders. Sure, to someone living in Maine, immigration isn't even on the radar. But to those of us living in the Southwest, it's become painfully clear that the mass migration of poverty and gangs across our border is destroying our communities.

An activist from Maine supporting Richardson is PRECISELY why immigration must be determined by the states alone rather than the feds.

People in Maine shouldn't have the ability to change our immigration policies because it DISPROPORTIONATELY affects states like California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Virginia, etc. Why should Senators from Maine -- where there is next to no immigration -- advocate for an amnesty that would flood only a small number of states? No, no, no... We will be destroyed if lily-white states like Maine are allowed to determine the direction of California (home to over a third of the illegal alien population).

First, Richardson is a border Governor. He has called a border emergency in his state. He most certainly doesn't want to get rid of all borders. Anyone who thinks so, obviously doesn't know jack about him.

Second, he did not continue to support Gonzales. The quote from the first anonymous comment was from April. (His support would be similar to a Republican supporting Reno because they knew her and liked her. Richardson also said, he was close to calling for Gonzales' resignation -- again in April. As the hearings continued, Richardson realized that Gonzales no longer deserved any benefit of the doubt. He did call for Gonzales' resignation.

As for the second anonymous comment, I will repeat, Richardson is a governor of a border state -- New Mexico. Oh, yeah, Maine is a border state too.

I have as much a right to determine the direction of this country as any other citizen. Anonymous gripes about Maine having Senators, gee, have you read the Constitution lately?

Finally, both anonymous comments complain about this being a site from Maine. The title of the blog is Maine for Richardson. There are other states for Richardson too. If you are from the Southwest, why did you choose to come here and put your graffiti and lies on this blog?
